Dragonflies Dragonflies are fascinating insects. They are one of Earth’s most ancient creatures; the oldest known fossils of dragonflies are about 325 million years old. There are about 5,000 species of dragonflies in all sizes and colors, and they live on every continent except Antarctica. Dragonflies are accomplished fliers. Each of the four wings can be controlled independently, making dragonflies the aerobatic stunt fliers of the insect world. Their multi-faceted eyes contain over twenty thousand separate lenses, meaning that they have superior vision. This, combined with their flying abilities, makes them a nightmare predator for their favorite prey, mosquitoes.
